Dodge City Days has come a really long way! 2014 marks its 54th Anniversary, and a lot has changed in those 54 years. Originally, there were two different events: one called The Boot Hill Fiesta (usually held in May) and the second, a ‘professional’ rodeo previously known as the RCA Rodeo, which took place in the summer months.
It was in 1960 when community leaders decided to step things up and combine resources to create a true community festival which they named Dodge City Days! In its beginning, the festival was comprised of three days, and then expanded to six, then eight and what is now a 10-day celebration. Besides the rodeo, other activities included multiple parades, a western horse show, sidewalk sales, square dances and performances by the Dodge City Cowboy Band, which still exists today. Somewhere between the late 60’s and early 70’s, the Chamber of Commerce sought out the land, raised the funds to create and purchase a true rodeo arena, which is now the Dodge City Roundup Arena.
The Dodge City Chamber is the overall sponsor and coordinator of Dodge City Days. The Committees for Dodge City Days are broken down into two sub-committees: the Dodge City Days Management Committee, which makes decisions on events and handles financial responsibilities and the Dodge City Days Committee, which is made up of business members that sponsor Dodge City Days events. These committees work year round striving to make Dodge City Days bigger and better each year.
Dodge City Days is now recognized as the second largest community celebration in the state of Kansas, second only to the Wichita River Festival. This 10-day festival draws thousands of people to Dodge City annually and generates approximately three million dollars, which has an economic impact of approximately nine million dollars on Dodge City. It is estimated that 100,000 individuals attend at least one Dodge City Days event.
